5 Essential Tips for Properly Loading Your Rental Dumpster

load a dumpster the right way

Home renovations, spring cleanouts, and major landscaping projects can be exhilarating, marking the beginning of something new or the end of an era.

But they all share one common challenge for homeowners: waste management. That's where the magic of a rental dumpster comes into play.

However, knowing how to load a rental dumpster effectively can make the difference between a smooth project run and unnecessary hassle or expenses.

This article will guide you through five essential tips to maximize your dumpster rental experience.

(1) Understand Dumpster Rental Policies

Before the dumpster even arrives at your driveway, it’s crucial to understand your rental company's policies.

Each company has its own set of rules regarding what can and cannot be thrown away, weight limits, and how high you can fill the dumpster.

Ignoring these policies can result in extra fees or the unpleasant surprise of uncollected waste.

Imagine loading up your dumpster, only to find out that half of it needs to be unloaded because you missed the weight limit.

Here is what we allow in our dumpsters.

(2) Plan Your Loading Strategy

Diving headfirst into loading your dumpster without a plan is akin to going grocery shopping on an empty stomach. You might end up with a lot of wasted space (or, in the case of shopping, too many snacks).

Start with the heaviest and bulkiest items at the bottom. Not only does this approach help with weight distribution, but it also allows you to fill in the gaps with smaller items later.

Picture trying to fit puzzle pieces together; it’s satisfying when everything snaps into place without leaving any voids.

(3) Break Down Large Items

That old couch or bulky armoire isn’t going to do you any favors by taking up half the space in your dumpster.

Where possible, break down large items into smaller, more manageable pieces.

This doesn’t just apply to furniture; think about large branches, cardboard boxes, or even dismantling certain home fixtures.

A homeowner once shared how they managed to fit an entire shed's worth of material into a single dumpster by simply taking the time to dismantle it piece by piece.

It’s like a game of Tetris—every space counts.

(4) Distribute Weight Evenly

An unevenly loaded dumpster is not just a safety hazard; it can also be a pain for your rental company to haul away.

To avoid the potential of tipping over or damage to your driveway, distribute the weight of your items evenly throughout the dumpster.

It might require a bit of foresight and rearranging, but ensuring that one side isn’t significantly heavier than the other can prevent a lot of issues down the line.

(5) Leave Space for Easy Access

It’s tempting to fill every inch of the dumpster, but leaving some space for easy access and last-minute items can be a lifesaver.

Plus, overfilling your dumpster beyond the designated fill line can result in additional fees or require you to remove items before collection.

It’s better to play it safe and leave a little room at the top.

Conclusion

Loading a rental dumpster properly isn’t just about getting rid of waste; it’s about doing so efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively.

By understanding rental policies, planning your loading strategy, breaking down large items, distributing weight evenly, and leaving space for easy access, you can ensure that your home project goes as smoothly as possible.

With these tips in hand, homeowners can tackle their projects with confidence, knowing they’re making the most of their rental dumpster.

Frequently Asked

How long are your rentals?

We offer 3 options 3 days, 7 days, and 10 days. If you wish to keep the dumpster longer than the initial rental period, the fee is $10/day. If you have a commercial or construction project, we offer a 14 day rental with an overage fee of $5 a day. We also offer custom pricing to fit your needs. If you need custom pricing, give us a call.

What happens if I keep it longer than the rental period?

We charge a $10/day fee after the initial rental period is over. For those taking advantage of our construction project pricing, the overage feee is $5/day. If you need a dumpster for a bigger construction project or commercial project, we would love to talk.

When should I have my dumpster delivered?

We recommend you have your dumpster delivered the day before you need it for a project.

Not only do we recommend this, but we have built our pricing structure around it. We don’t count the dumpster delivery day or the dumpster pick up day in the rental period.

You can be confident you will be able to use your dumpster for the full 3, 7, or 10 days when you rent from Wise Guys Dumpsters.

Do you offer same day dumpster delivery?

In most cases, we can provide same day delivery. Call us for availability and so we can provide a rush for your order.

We know situations change, or other dumpster companies back out. We are here for you when that occurs. And will do everything we can to get you a dumpster so you can start your project.

We, however, recommend that you plan ahead, if at all possible. Booking your dumpster delivery a day before your project begins will ensure it is available for you to use the moment you're ready to start your project.

As mentioned above, we won't ever penalize you for ordering your dumpster delivery a day before. You will always get the full days for which you booked.

How do I prepare my site for dumpster delivery?

Ensure the area is free from vehicles or other obstacles and is easily accessible for our delivery trucks.

Is there anything I can't put in the dumpster?

Unfortunately, there are a few things that the Denton County landfill won’t allow and a few other things that are allowed but require special care.

Not allowed:

  • No paint
  • No tires
  • No batteries
  • No chemicals
  • No rocks
  • No dirt
  • No concrete
  • No bricks
  • No shingles unless spread out over multiple dumpsters. If you are a roofing company, we can serve you, but please give us a call so we can talk about the best approach for your work site.

Allowed with exceptions:

  • Appliances are allowed, but there is a $10 charge per larger appliance item, such as a refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, etc.
  • Please let us know if you place appliances in the dumpster, and how many, we are required to take those to a different area of the dump when disposing of them.
  • If you are demolishing a brick house, items such as rocks, dirt, concrete, bricks, and shingles, you would be better off with a dump trunk rather than a dumpster.

What should I do if I have paint to dispose of?

If you have paint you need to dispose of, you can put kitty litter in it and once it has dried, your county/city will have a facility that you can take it to.

How much does a dumpster rental cost?

Prices can vary depending on location, length of rental and weight of what you are disposing of but, for most customers, dumpsters start at are $375 for a medium sized (15 Cubic Yard) dumpster and $400 for a large (20 Cubic Yards) dumpster.

What is the difference between a 15 yard and a 20 yard?

They are identical except that the 15 yard is 4 foot tall. The 20 yard is 6 foot tall. All our dumpsters have barn doors that open on the back, so you can completely walk into them, making it easy to load them efficiently.
